There is a simple explanation. At the end of the day, everything Apple has to offer you that's less than $10,000 is just an EXPENSIVE TOY. They thrive on clever marketing and well designed product exteriors. The last time I checked, a Mac Book that looks amazing and apparently runs on a half-light bulb’s power and a quarter will get you a $.25 cup of coffee. Because, once you've peeled away all the distractions you'll find yourself sitting at home alone with a super-cool looking $2,000 jam-box that checks email and browses 'fun' websites, but doesn't work very well on any sites that achieve any real function in life, unless you decide to pick up a little UNIX knowledge.
This is coming from a former Mac guy. I thought my 12" G4 Powerbook (this is after at least a decade of Apple products, back to the IIe) was the greatest thing since sliced bread, until I realized how little I could actually do, compared to top of the line PC's. So, on to my next purchase, this time I decided against the $2000 aluminum casing and went with a beast. A Dell, with 2 Quad-Core Intels, 8 Gigs of RAM, 3 CUDA-Compatible Nvidia SLI Cards producing close to 600 individual virtual GPU's, and 6TB of Hot-Swappable RAID-5 Storage, and to top it off, 2 pretty decent little 24" 1080P Displays. I got all of that for less than a midgrade Apple Tower, with no display, at the time. And, now that Bill Gates is retired and out of the way, it appears that Microsoft is on a vendetta. In the last year or so, they have produced a comparable, if not better product than the industry standard in nearly every facet of software development, and in most cases, it's free.
Don't be afraid of the usual, "Windows is broken" talk, again see for yourself. I'm around these things every day, and have yet to see a case where "Vista is broken", or "Windows doesn't work" and the blame was placed properly. In each instance, the user had taken the liberty of doing something that wasn't supported and they were warned about it to the point of nausea, yet chose to do it anyway. That's not all bad though, because on an Apple, unless you've picked up some UNIX, you can't even release an IP address (I said "release", not "renew", and yes, there is a difference). My A-Holes at least took some time to research doing something cool, they failed miserably, but at least they learned something. In each occasion we were able to save the installation. In fact, after a few years of supporting around 500 Vista Users we've yet to lose a single bit of data and we haven't had to reinstall/reimage any of the machines other than when we are switching a machine out for a new hire, etc.
If you're an Apple/Unix-guy then more power to you, but if you don't have any real allegiance to anyone, then maybe you should look around and make a decision for yourself instead of doing what the bright box hanging on the wall in the living room tells you to do.
P.S. If you can get the iTunes out of your eye for a second, you really should go take a look at the Zune Media Player, it's pretty impressive, the software, not the player, iPods and Zune Media Devices each do things better than the other, I'll stay out of that one, although wireless sharing/syncing is pretty cool, plus bigger screen, sorry. The store has, from what I can tell, a bigger selection for cheaper, and they even have a Zune Pass that lets you listen to anything you want, with no max, and after a ~$12 per month charge they go ahead and let you keep ten songs for good, not bad! Also, Expression Encoder Express is free and supports compliant h.264 encoding up to 1080p out of the box, no codec mess.

Ok I'm done. Think for yourselves and make a wise decision, whatever it may be.
